Championing nature for the DMCC's Sustainability Hub

The UAE is known for its rapid economic growth and resource-heavy development. As the country grapples with a high carbon footprint, various organisations and government-led initiatives are pushing for more sustainable progress. This shift is driven by the

UAE’s Net Zero 2050 agenda

, a transformative framework aiming to make the UAE one of the world’s most sustainable economies by mid-century.

COP28 was hosted in Dubai, in 2023

, and put a spotlight on the UAE's climate action efforts and commitment to sustainable development. During the conference, the UAE outlined enhanced Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) with stricter emissions reduction targets and pledged significant investments in clean energy. Additionally, the country signed the UAE Declaration on Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Action alongside 159 countries: aiming to reduce emissions and enhance resilience within food systems.

While these initiatives mark progress toward sustainability, the journey is ongoing, and transformation will require sustained efforts and more substantial reductions in emissions across all sectors.

A notable contributor to this sustainability movement is the

DMCC (Dubai Multi Commodities Centre)

, the world’s flagship free zone and the leading trade hub for commodities. The DMCC, headquartered in Dubai, is home to over 25,000 member companies, providing a dynamic environment for businesses to succeed across various sectors, including commodities trading, technology, and financial services.

As part of its commitment to sustainability, DMCC has launched their

Sustainability Hub

, an innovative ecosystem designed to help companies in its community achieve their environmental goals.

The DMCC Sustainability Hub is a game changer for ESG practices in Dubai

The

DMCC's Sustainability Hub

, launched in March 2024, is at the forefront of driving environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices in the UAE and beyond. This network of industry leaders offers members exclusive access to resources that enable them to set emissions reduction targets, implement long-term sustainability strategies, and align with the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 ambitions.

The DMCC has recently signed a series of agreements with leading global sustainability platforms, including Earthly, S&P Global Market Intelligence, and Climate Essentials, to empower its members on their sustainability journeys. These partnerships mark a new era because it strengthens the DMCC’s role in tackling climate challenges on both a local and global scale.

The agreements signed will provide DMCC members with important tools such as carbon footprint calculators, sustainability performance benchmarks, and verified, nature-based carbon offset projects. These resources are designed to democratise access to ESG data and help businesses of all sizes, particularly SMEs, integrate sustainable practices into their operations.

As part of the hub,

Climate Essentials

will bring their accessible platform that enables businesses to measure, track, and reduce their carbon emissions. By using this platform, DMCC members can calculate their carbon footprints in line with climate science protocols, ensuring alignment with global ESG standards.

On the other hand,

S&P Global Market Intelligence

will equip DMCC members with the Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA), a tool that helps businesses link sustainability with their overall strategies. The CSA benchmarks progress against industry peers and provides insights into global sustainability reporting frameworks.

And

Earthly

will support the DMCC by providing its members with tailored carbon mitigation strategies and access to verified, high-integrity nature-based solutions that deliver measurable environmental and social impacts. Our role is to ensure that the projects DMCC members invest in are thoroughly vetted, effective in carbon removal, and contribute to biodiversity restoration and community support. Our partnership will enable DMCC members to meet their sustainability goals while aligning with the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 ambitions.

When launching the partnership, Lorenzo Curci, Co-founder and CCO of Earthly, emphasised our commitment to both environmental and social outcomes: “By prioritising nature-based solutions, Earthly not only helps companies meet their sustainability goals but also contributes to the global fight against climate change, protecting ecosystems, and creating a more resilient planet.”

Nature-based solutions (NbS) for holistic sustainability and climate action

Mangrove restoration, Maroalika, Madagascar - mangrove forests can store up to four times more carbon per hectare than most other tropical forests.

The DMCC members will have access to one of the most effective ways to combat climate change: Nature-Based Solutions (NbS). These approaches leverage natural ecosystems to address environmental challenges such as carbon emissions, biodiversity loss, and ecosystem degradation. NbS, including reforestation, wetland restoration and regenerative agriculture, are critical to achieving global climate goals.

According to

reports from the UN Environment Programme (UNEP)

and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), NbS can potentially reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 5 gigatons of CO2 per year by 2030 and could increase to 10 gigatons annually by 2050. Forest-based NbS, in particular, could account for 62% of these reductions, while grasslands, croplands, peatlands, and coastal ecosystems also contribute significantly.

These solutions are essential in helping to meet the Paris Agreement's goal of limiting global warming to below 1.5°C, but they require safeguards and additional financing to reach their full potential.

We are happy that DMCC has recognised the potential of these solutions, and partnered with Earthly to support

verified high-impact projects

that remove carbon, restore biodiversity, and benefit local communities.
