Project information

Manoa Farm

Manoa REDD+ Project is located at Manoa Farm, which covers an area of 74,038,7 hectares. The project area lies in the cities of Cujubim, Itapoã do Oeste, and Porto Velho, state of Rondônia state, Northern Brazil. Manoa Farm has been sustainably managed since 1999, according to the Sustainable Forest Management Plan of the company. The management aims at timber production combined with the conservation of natural resources; therefore, it adopts low-impact harvesting techniques and meets all current legislation and forest certification principles. The farm's 73,000 hectares of forest demonstrates the pioneering in sustainable forest management and are some of the few forest areas remaining in the private area in the region, constantly threatened by invasions and timber theft.

In the years prior to project initiation, the project identified risks of forest degradation due to strong deforestation pressure, fragile property security, and a heightened risk of invasion. Land use in the area is dominated by three major themes: a) the decline of timber production; b) the conversion of forests into pastures; and c) the increase in agricultural mechanisation. On top of these pressures facing the forests, local communities lack sufficient support to ensure a stable and successful livelihood. For example, the communities in the project area lack sufficient sanitation with only one UBS (Basic Health Unit) to meet the needs of the entire population.

The Earthly Rating

The Earthly rating is the industry-first holistic project assessment. This rating system consists three diameters of the project: carbon restoration, biodiversity, and human resource. Earthly researchers analyse 106 data points, aggregating information across the three vital pillars of carbon, biodiversity and people. Projects in Earthly's marketplace all exceed a minimum score of 5/10.

Manoa project over time

The image illustrates the extent of deforestation/ forest loss in and near the designated project zone since 2001. The project zone is marked with a white outline, and its implementation began in 2011. Deforestation happens before and after the project start date, yet it is mostly happening outside the project area boundary, which may indicate that the project is actually saving the forest from potential deforestation.

Project Area: Through Time

The Manoa REDD+ Project is a groundbreaking partnership between Biofílica and Grupo Triângulo, situated at Manoa Farm in Cujubim, Rondônia. Spanning an impressive 74,038.7 hectares, the project has garnered global recognition for its exceptional forest management practices and commitment to nature conservation over nearly 30 years.

This project started in 2001 and has protected the area from deforestation for many years. Shown in the image, deforestation happens mostly outside the project area boundary.

Positive for People

Activities and programs are being drafted as a continuous process of training local actors in forest management techniques, agroforestry systems, waste management, and low carbon agriculture, among other initiatives. Alongside this, the project is working directly with social actors in the region, through the construction of a training center inside the property, CEFLOM, whose main objective is to train local communities in forest management techniques and to work on environmental education concepts with schools in the region.

The project provides training, workshops, courses and lectures focused on the responsible management of environmental resources. The planning includes quarterly activities (four times a year) with up to 30 people (when carried out at CEFLOM) focused on topics related to sustainable socioeconomic development.

Besides protecting the project area, the Project also seeks to encourage the change of the conventional agricultural production system, promoting the recovery of degraded areas through agricultural diversification and stimulating the implementation of Agroforestry Systems combined with Low Carbon Agriculture that is intended to benefit the wider municipality of Cujubim.

The project conducts raining in low-impact management techniques, involving an average of 30 workers a year, and about 24 college students. In addition, the project carries out activities related to environmental education, which in the most recent monitoring period involved around 155 students. The project also supports and collaborates with the scientific/educational environment by establishing a partnership with the Fundação Universidade Federal de Rondônia [Federal University of Rondônia Foundation] (UNIR) to monitor biodiversity through a postgraduate research project.

Good for Earth

The main objective of this project is to maintain the forest cover while ensuring economic sustainability. In order to alleviate the pressures on the forest, strategies were adopted, such as: the exploitation of forest management in the north of the farm and in other areas of greater risk, block access roads in remote areas, and permanent watch in areas where greater fragility was identified.

The project works to protect 177 flora species and more than 360 fauna species. Out of these species, 12 are mammals and 9 are birds in some type of threat, according to IUCN. The project also works to maintain "ecological corridors" with Conservation Units of the state of Rondônia, reducing negative impacts of degradation in the wider region.

The Project is keen on wider scientific collaboration and actively seeks agreements with local educational and research institutions to provide the incentive to research and disseminate scientific and environmental knowledge to local society.
